Intent
At North Star 265 we recognise the importance and influence that Physical Education can have on the development of the whole student. As a PE department we are committed to developing both the sports person, and the socially & emotionally intellectual person. In KS2 we follow the Complete PE curriculum which is supplemented by the Twinkl Move PE scheme. A yearly overview can be viewed below.
We aim to embed the following into the curriculum as often as possible:
- Develop core functional motor skills that each student will need in sports and throughout their life
- Ensure students are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Encourage an active and healthy lifestyle
- Build self-esteem, confidence and resilience
- Provide all pupils with access to the curriculum
- Engagement in competitive sports and activities
- Develop competence across a broad range of skills and sports
- Encourage confidence when performing team-based sports
Implementation
- All lessons are taught by a qualified PE teacher and/or a specialist PE teaching assistant.
- Students will follow a structured PE curriculum that will cover a range of sports in the aim to engage and strengthen a multitude of necessary core skills that they can build on
- Tailored lesson objective depending on the current level of each class
- Personalised differentiation techniques used within panning and lessons
- Intra and inter school sports, for example sports day and football fixtures
- Consistency in routines including an introduction and warm up, skill development and plenary
- Opportunity for children to perform and feedback/ offer guidance to each other
- Use of IT within lesson to give further detail for the lesson plan, objectives and correct terminology
- Perform team-based sports and encourage positive sportsmanship and teamwork to achieve the objective as a collective
Impact
The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress in their performance, competition and social and mental development. Student will then be expected to leave North Star 265 with a foundation of core functional skill (motor and social) and will have success in the following:
- Applying and build on these skills in a secondary school-based setting
- Working with and effectively communicating with peers during team/ group activities
- Recall information from previous lessons and link to new learning
- To attend extra-curricular activities and represent the school in intra & interschool sports
- To have a healthy relationship with food and exercise, and know the benefits of this
- To offer effective guidance to peers, relating directly to the teaching points of the activity/lesson
Physical activity and understanding of a healthy life style is promoted through the PE curriculum. The pupils will be experiencing team based skills and developing their own physical health through fitness sessions. Sportsmanship and cooperation gives them the skills to make positive relationships in all settings. Pupils will experience many different activities that will be designed to keep them active.
Swimming
Each class will experience 2 terms of swimming every year. Swimming lessons encourage the pupils’ confidence and enjoyment of swimming and water based activities. General fitness and stamina develop as pupils improve their ability to swim for longer distances. Lessons include important safety awareness and dangers of being in or near the water.
Pupils are grouped according to ability and can progress through beginner, intermediate and confident swimmers. The ability to swim widths and length of the pool are goals to achieve. Pupils’ performances are recorded and certificates can be earned for the different distances that the pupil can swim.
