PSHE
At North Star 265°, we believe that every student has the right to access a personalised curriculum which supports their individual needs, interests and experiences. Our PSHE curriculum has been designed to fulfil the needs of our students taking in to account their backgrounds and lifestyles.
PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop the whole child through carefully planned, relevant and well resourced lessons that develop the knowledge, skills and attributes our children need to protect and enhance their wellbeing. Through the lessons, children will learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. It fulfils the requirements of 2020 Statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education.
Our PSHE education also makes a significant contribution to students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development, their behaviour and safety, and to their social and emotional development and wellbeing. It also supports development across our British Values (Tolerance, Respect, Rule of Law, Democracy and Individual Liberty).
We intend for children to:
- Increase mental wellbeing, safety and life skills
- Develop self esteem and self confidence.
- Build the skills necessary to become functioning members of society at any age.
- Take an interest in every day events and topical issues, locally and across the world
- Identify their interests and develop their passions and values.
- Find out about themselves, the wider world and their place in it.
- Develop their confidence, resilience, happiness and well-being.
- Understand and be part of a healthy relationship whilst recognising the signs of unhealthy relationships.
- Work as part of a team and be prepared for potential employment.
- Develop a sense of safety and tolerance within the community they live in.
- Understand the role of money in their lives and develop skills to manage money
- Understand how families form, as a result of separation or divorce and the impact this has on emotional wellbeing.
- Understand the facts and the law about sex, sexuality and sexual health in an age-appropriate way.
Implementation – How will we do this?
We have drawn on guidance from the PSHE Association in revising our Curriculum Framework for PSHE to ensure that it meets the needs of our students in today’s changing society. The Framework identifies the key concepts and skills that underpin PSHE education and helps us to fulfil our statutory responsibility of delivering RSE (Relationship and sex education) and spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development, as well as prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of future life.
PSHE is taught through the Jigsaw scheme using individual lessons, developed across three levels, all focussing on an overarching theme for the term: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World. This ensures learning is revisited and extended in an age appropriate manner.
- Lessons are adapted to meet the needs of the class, or bespoke lessons are used to address any current issues.
- RSE is taught to the Year 6 children in Term 6 after consulting with parents.
- The PSHE sequencing model has been designed reflecting on key contextual data.
- We make extra links to current events and SMSC/ British Values through awareness days and whole school assemblies.
- PHSE makes explicit links to the 4 strands of SMSC ensuring students have a holistic experience.
- Lessons are based on real world experiences and issues to ensure relevance to everyday life.
- A team of Anti Bullying Ambassadors promote kindness and tolerance, supporting with any issues in the playground. They are trained and hold regular meetings with the Anti Bullying Lead.
- PHSE lessons make links with other subjects, in particular, Science (puberty, reproduction), PE and DT, understanding how to lead healthy lives.
